Last year, BMW recorded two historical milestones – for the first time in its long history, it launched a large-capacity model on the market, which also had a platform with front-wheel drive . For staunch supporters of tradition, it literally hits the heart. In addition, they intend to continue in Bavaria in cars that, according to many myths, have the wrong axle, which is proven by the second generation of the small SUV X1 .
At first glance, the new X1 may remind some of the spacious Active Tourer and Gran Tourer , but from a global perspective, we can talk about an intergenerational design shift towards more pleasing shapes. The car also received a more robust shaping of bumpers, fenders and side sills, all additionally decorated with gray protective plastic. The front and rear lights use popular LEDs. Although it may seem impossible in a direct comparison, the novelty is 38 mm shorter ( 4439 mm in total) than its predecessor. However, with a width of 1821 mm and a height of 1598 mm, it is 21 mm wider and a full 53 mm higher. 2670 mm remained between the axles.
The use of the UKL1 platform with front-wheel drive and transversely mounted engines brings, in addition to the change in driving characteristics, more space in both rows of seats. In the back there is 37mm more legroom with the standard seating arrangement, but if you choose the optional sliding bench (in the range of 130mm) it can get up to 66mm more space. The position of the seats has been increased by 36 mm at the front and by 64 mm at the rear, this brings with it the advantage of a better view out of the car. The luggage compartment now holds 505 liters , 85 more than its predecessor, and even 1,550 liters after folding down the split rear backrests. The driver's workplace itself looks very valuable, its dominant feature is the standard 6.5-inch display of the iDrive multimedia system. For an additional fee, a head-up display will also be available for the first time, complementing the entire range of electronic assistants.
So far, only four-cylinder engines with a volume of 2.0 liters appear under the hood, burning both gasoline and diesel. Fragrant fumes are released by the sDrive20i and xDrive20i (192 hp and 280 Nm) and xDrive25i (231 hp and 350 Nm), while the sDrive18d (150 hp and 330 Nm), xDrive20d (190 hp and 400 Nm) and xDrive25d (231 hp and 450 Nm). The vast majority of power units cooperate with an eight-speed automatic , but the weakest diesel can also be combined with a six-speed manual. The famous driving pleasure is provided by additional sports steering, active shock absorbers or the M Sport chassis.
The Bavarian competitor of the Audi Q3 or Mercedes GLA will go on sale in October this year , and in addition to the classic version, the Advantage, Sport Line, xLine and M Sport versions will traditionally appear. The latter scores with an optical bodykit, 18-inch wheels or sports seats.
