The 1980s were a crazy time in the automotive industry that meant the pursuit of performance. BMW jumped on the bandwagon with its M division , which was born out of motorsport. And the first car that hinted at the future of supersedans was the M535i E28 , which was produced in 1980 and 1981. Touring car racing was very popular at the time, and BMW decided to turn customer desires into revenue with this car. Thus, a modified luxury sedan with many elements derived from motorsport was created. A more powerful six-cylinder engine , improved aerodynamics and better driving characteristics were a hit. And all this could lead to the first BMW M5 , which came to the market 5 years later.
