Alfa Romeo in rally

Once again, we will try to map the participation of some car company in the rally, but today it will be a bit brief. This time it is about the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo , which does not come to mind in connection with the rally. The car company itself never really got involved in competitions and remained loyal to circuits. The Giulietta and Giulia sports sedans and coupes competed in a number of competitions, but without significant success. They did not appear until the GTV 2000 , piloted by Guy Frequelin and Bernard Béguin . Subsequently, the Alfetta GT invaded the track. The cars had transaxles , so they were perfectly balanced. Originally, however, only a weaker version with a 1.6 engine was homologated. Andruet and Ballestrieri in the semi-factory team were able to win European Championship events with this car. Andruet also came third in the 1975 Tour de Corse , still Alfa Romeo 's best World Championship result.

This was followed by a move to the more powerful Alfetta GTV with a two-litre engine, in which Mauro Pregliasco excelled, winning his class at Rally Sanremo 1978. The next car was an Alfa Turbodelta , and newcomer Maurizio Verini joined the team. The supercharged engine originally had 265 horses, but over time they tuned it to 320 thoroughbreds. In addition, the weight of the special was only 960 kilograms. After the introduction of the Audi Quattro , the ambitious project was terminated. Later, the special GTV6 with a 2.5 engine appeared on asphalt tracks. The 240's performance on dry tarmac gave Yves Loubet 3 Group A victories at the Tour de Corse in 1984-86. In 1986, in addition, Loubet repeated the third place in the absolute ranking. Then cars 75 and 33 appeared sporadically on the tracks, but they never achieved significant success. The last attempt was a private attempt to build a type 147 GTA from circuit races according to the regulations of the S1600 class, but even this did not bring Alfa any significant successes. Today, you might think of Czech Martin Rada , who regularly competes in the famous Monte Carlo Rally.
