Even in the fourth generation, the Mazda MX-5 relies on an old-school engine strategy, i.e. you won't see a turbocharger under the hood. It has long been talked about that the current engines will get increased power, and according to the Japanese premiere of the new facelift, it really happened! And fans can rest easy, because even in this case there was no application of supercharging.
The 2.0-liter four-cylinder Skyactiv-G received drastic modifications, more precisely, it received an optimized air intake, new cylinders, revised pistons (lighter by 27 g), a throttle valve with a larger diameter, wider exhaust pipes and larger exhaust valves. The result is not only an increase in performance, but also a reduction in weight, better consumption and environmental friendliness. Another big novelty is the presence of a dual-mass flywheel.
The engine now offers increased power by more than 15%, namely increased from 160 to 184 horsepower and torque increased from 200 to 205 Nm. Mazda also managed to move the limiter – from the current 6800 to 7500 revolutions per minute. The weaker 1.5 Skyactiv-G received combustion technology as a more powerful drive unit, so it now has a power of 132 hp and a torque of 152 Nm. Even with this unit, better consumption and emissions are a matter of course.
The facelift also brings a new adjustable steering wheel and a redesigned TFT display, but customers can look forward to a brown soft top, light leather interior or 16-inch alloy wheels with metallic black accents. In Japan, for example, the Advanced Smart City Brake Support system or Lane Departure Warning will be standard. Sales on the domestic market will start on July 26 this year. The classic roadster starts at $23,218 (approx. 508,000 crowns), and the MX-5 RF starts at $34,636 (approx. 757,000 crowns).
