How to repair door dent

A dented door in your car is certainly not unexpected, as there are many situations in which it can happen. If we are more specific, it should be said that we can cause it to ourselves, just as it can also happen that someone else can cause us the given damage. The question is what to do next. If the given door is damaged more than enough, it is necessary to find an adequate replacement for it and replace the door in the classic way. Today, it shouldn't be a problem, especially for older cars, that we look at junkyards. However, the classic exchange is not always the ideal way. It should be added that there are also situations when, on the contrary, a repair can help. And that's both because we will have the existing door in the same paint as the rest of the car, and also because a possible repair can be financially much more advantageous than a replacement. So how should a dented door repair be done?

First, let's remove the upholstery

This is found in the doors of basically any car today. So the first step is quite logical to try to dismantle the upholstery. It mainly depends on the type of car and how the upholstery is attached. We can mainly encounter two procedures. The first one is related to the fact that the upholstery is attached with classic screws, which we simply loosen and then simply remove the door upholstery. But there can also be another situation, when the upholstery as such is snapped into the door, which means that we simply click it out in one place and continue with a similar procedure until we remove it completely.

When disassembling the upholstery, do not forget to proceed slowly and carefully. It is also due to the fact that, as part of the upholstery, door handles are also inserted into the door , just as they can be handles intended for pulling down windows . Here, too, it is necessary to take into account that the given elements will first be dismantled, and only then can the upholstery itself actually be dismantled.

Also remove the insulation

The fact that insulation is also placed within the door does not have to be anything special either. It can most often be glued here. That is why it is also necessary to remove it, in such a way that we cut it in a certain place and then try to peel it off or just lift it. Here, we must not forget the fact that we should always have the insulation in the door, so it will quite logically happen that you will return it to its place again after repairing the door. As soon as it happens that the insulation of the door is gone, we can already say that you are ready to carry out the repair itself.

Prepare the appropriate tools

What you must not forget is also the preparation of suitable tools. The repair of a damaged door should take place in such a way that you try to knock out the dent into an ideal shape. Various tools can help you do this. From the classic ones, it can be a hammer, as well as a wooden block. In some cases, a crowbar or screwdriver can also be used, but maybe even a chisel. In the same way, you need to have a preparation planer available, which is an ideal tool when you need to follow the plane. On the other hand, it is more than clear that not everyone has the given tool at home or has access to it. In such a case, a ruler may be sufficient for you, which will also fulfill its purpose quite well in the given problem.

Fix the door

Once you have the appropriate repair tools, you can start by knocking the damage into the best possible shape. You won't always be able to do it, so you have to take into account that you may also need to get a welding kit, in order to remove any dents by welding. The specific chosen procedure is mainly connected to the fact how big the given damage is, just as it is also connected to the fact to what extent you can solve the given problem in classic ways.

Final edit

Once the door is repaired, don't forget about the necessary finishing touches. What is it about? It is, of course, necessary to sand the given surface. In the first stage, an angle grinder will definitely help us, which becomes an ideal tool when we want to save work as well as time. If we have finished the rough sanding, we need to pick up the sandpaper. Naturally, this is due to the fact that the given surface needs to be properly roughened.

Once the surface of the repaired door is prepared in this way, we can already use the sealant, which is an essential part of the door, as it will become the layer that will be placed under the paint. If you are looking for a suitable solution, not only aluminum sealant can come in handy, but also fiberglass sealant. Once the sealant is in place, you can let it harden in the classic way.

Paint the door

When the putty is solid, only the last and naturally cosmetic phase remains. This consists in the fact that your door is painted. You can do this either yourself or within a specific paint shop. Once this step is over, all that remains is to install the upholstery itself. It is not necessary to explain the procedure in any complicated way here. The reason for this is that this is a procedure completely opposite to when the upholstery was removed. As soon as the upholstery is in its right place, it is safe to say that the repair of the dented door has been successful, it is definitely done and your car looks perfect again. In addition, you are sure that this DIY repair can be significantly cheaper than a possible procedure associated with the need to change the entire door. Regardless of the fact that even in the case of a replacement, possible final painting may be needed. And that's because the car keeps its same color.
