BMW will install a new engine in the 220d Coupé

A minor revolution is taking place under the hood of the BMW 2 Series Coupé . The two-liter diesel under the hood of the 220d version with 184 horsepower is replaced by a completely new unit with the same volume, but with TwinPower Turbo technology.

The two-liter power unit is a member of the new BMW Group engine family and features the latest TwinPower Turbo technologies. It thus reaches a power of 190 hp (+ 6 hp), while the maximum torque peaks at 400 Nm (+ 20 Nm). The new version of the two-door car, equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox with a sensor, synchronizes the engine speed with the speed of the input shaft of the gearbox, achieves a combined consumption of 4.4 – 4.1 l/100 km and CO2 emission levels of 115 to 107 g/km, in conjunction with eight-speed Steptronic automatic , with a wider gear range and better vibration damping, the corresponding values are between 4.1 – 3.8 l/100 km, respectively 107 to 99 g/km CO2 (based on the EU test cycle and depending on the selected dimension tires).

The increase in power and the improvement of the torque curve of the new diesel engine, in conjunction with both types of gearboxes, have a positive impact not only on the environment, but also on the dynamics and acceleration of the BMW 220d Coupé. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h has improved by 0.1 seconds to 7.1 seconds when combined with the 6-speed manual transmission, or 7.0 seconds with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission. Thanks to the increase in engine power, the maximum weight of a braked trailer has increased by 300 kg to 1500 kg.

Highlights of the new four-cylinder diesel engine include an aluminum alloy block with heat-pressed cylinder liners with a reduced coefficient of friction, integrated balance shafts, more efficient temperature control , a parametrically controlled oil pump and a more efficient supercharger with variable intake geometry. The Common Rail direct injection system , equipped with solenoid fuel injectors, has also undergone optimization. The injectors now work with a maximum filling pressure of 2000 bar and guarantee particularly precise fuel delivery. The auto stop/start system is standard.
