Mazda is preparing a successor to the RX-8

Mazda will return to rotary Wankel engine production and launch a successor to the RX-8 type. It may be named RX-9 , but the name has not yet been confirmed. It should be built on the foundations of the new MX-5 , it will also get rear-wheel drive and it will be a traditional two-door sports car, which would rather follow on from the original RX-7 types. The rotary engine, however, will be completely new and should produce 300 horsepower. The SkyActiv engine development team is now working to eliminate the consumption and lubrication problems typical of older rotary engines.

The production car is due to be introduced to the public in 2017, 50 years after the launch of the Cosmo Sport , Mazda 's first car equipped with a rotary engine.
