BMW Z1 celebrates 25 years!

25 years. That's quite a long time, don't you think? It's even such a long time that it deserves a proper celebration right in front of the BMW museum in Munich . And who is actually celebrating? The cool sports car BMW Z1 , which was introduced exactly 25 years ago. The ceremony will take place this Sunday!

The car was originally built as a concept to showcase new materials and technologies developed at BMW Technik GmbH . However, the prototype was such a success that it was put into serial production a year after the presentation. The great thing about it all was that it retained all the goodies, such as electrically retractable doors, a shell galvanized chassis or perhaps a plastic body that could be completely replaced in less than an hour.

Under the hood was a rather large six-cylinder with a volume of 2.5 liters and a power of 125 kW. With it, the light sports car accelerated from 0-100 km/h in under 8 seconds and stopped accelerating at 225 km/h.

The first BMW Z1 model rolled off the production line in 1989, the last one with the number 8000 ended production in 1991. At the time, the roadster was sold for a price starting at 83,000 marks, currently it is valued at up to 500,000 crowns among collectors.
