Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG – The most powerful four-cylinder for the third time!

Mercedes-AMG boasts that it has the world's most powerful mass-produced four-cylinder engine in its portfolio. This is the turbocharged two-liter engine that we know from the A 45 AMG or CLA 45 AMG models. Now they are officially joined by a sharp variant of the urban crossover, the GLA 45 AMG !

In terms of appearance, you probably don't need to imagine the default GLA , and the same is true of its derivative variant from AMG . Although it is a completely new model, the design modifications are completely in line with what we are used to from the brand. On the GLA 45 AMG , we can find a new front bumper with a splitter, prominent side sills, a redesigned rear bumper with a diffuser and two double, chrome-plated exhaust tips. The customer can pay extra for more pronounced aerodynamic elements , carbon fiber details or a large wing on the fifth door. Completely new for AMG is the division badge in a double slat in the grille and the TURBO AMG lettering behind the front wheels.

The chassis has been properly stiffened, and the standard AMG sports version has specially tuned springs and dampers and larger anti-roll bars, which help to increase lateral acceleration and reduce unwanted body movements in corners. An AMG performance version with stiffer springs and shock absorbers is available for an additional fee. On all four wheels there are ventilated disc brakes with transverse drilling and gray calipers, red ones are optional. Five-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels with 235/45 R19 tires are standard. It is possible to pay extra for one-inch larger discs in titanium gray or matte black.

The aforementioned most powerful four-cylinder in the world has an exact volume of 1,991 cm 3 and comes from the BlueDIRECT family. It delivers 265 kW (360 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 450 Nm at 2,250-5,000 rpm . Acceleration from rest to 100 km/h is a matter of 4.8 seconds and the maximum speed is electronically limited to the traditional 250 km/h . Despite all this, the GLA 45 AMG is able to drive in the combined cycle for 7.5 liters per 100 km . It emits 175 grams of CO 2 in one kilometer, which means that it meets the Euro 6 environmental standard ahead of time, which will come into force only in 2017. When tuning the car, AMG focused on good response from the gas pedal and power steering that changes its effect according to the current speed .

The installed gearbox is the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT dual-clutch system with seven gears . It comes out of the factory with the option of setting three operating modes, with manual (M) and sport (S) having a character reminiscent of the supersport SLS AMG GT . The third mode is purely ecological operation (C), when the control unit concentrates on quiet and economical driving. The ECO start/stop system is also activated in this mode.

As a matter of course for the GLA 45 AMG is the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, which was specially developed to highlight the car's potential and its dynamic character. The hydraulic multi-disc clutch is integrated in the differential on the rear axle and is able to send up to 50% of the power to the rear wheels in the event of front wheel slippage. When driving economically, all the power flows to the wheels of the front axle. The car's ESP can be set in three modes – ESP ON , Sport Handling Mode and ESP OFF . The first still watches over the driver, the second forgives him for some transgressions and the third gives up his interventions.

In the car's interior, customers will find leather sports seats with microfiber and contrasting red stitching. The crown of the three-spoke steering wheel with paddles or gear lever is similarly made. The seat belts are also red and the dashboard is made of brushed aluminum . Of course, the RACETIMER system displays driving data to the driver.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG will make its world premiere next week at the Detroit Auto Show, and the manufacturer is targeting a younger clientele with it. The price is expected to be around 43,000 pounds , which translates to just over 1.4 million crowns. Right from the start, as is customary with Mercedes-Benz , Edition 1 will be available. The latter will extract a significantly larger amount from customers, but will offer almost everything that is on the surcharge list.
