Ferrari Enzo (2002 – 2004)

It is one of the most ultimate super sports of all time , a riding statue of the founder of the famous brand, the dream of many boys, men or men. This is how only one car can be characterized in a nutshell – the Ferrari Enzo !

The Enzo was created in 2002 as a successor to the famous F40 or GTO types . According to Luca di Montezemolo, head of Ferrari, this car goes hand in hand with the four consecutive F1 Constructors' Cup titles won by the Maranell carmaker just up to 2002. The name Enzo Ferrari (or Ferrari Enzo if you prefer) is not for its own sake – the carmaker chose as a tribute to the founder of the company Enzo Ferrari.

The design of the car is to follow the legendary super sports F40 and F50 , which the designer Ken Okuyama , the former chief designer of the Pininfarina studio, managed perfectly. The shape and appearance of the body were fine-tuned for almost 3,000 hours in the wind tunnel . The result is not only a unique design, but above all a body with high stability even at speeds exceeding 300 km/h. The most important element is the electronically controlled rear spoiler and adjustable front diffuser caps – these two elements smoothly change the downforce and help the excellent stability of the entire car. The design is inspired by Formula 1 single-seaters, the classics are mainly the large wing doors and the four small lights at the back. Materials such as carbon (the space frame is also made from the same material), plastic composites or light metals were used for the production of the body, which helps to reduce the weight to the resulting 1365 kg.

In the interior, you will first be absorbed by the excellent seats, which, together with the steering wheel, are individually adapted to the requirements of individual customers . When you've had enough of them, you get to a steering wheel that fits in your hand with an airbag and a number of buttons that control the damper setting or reverse gear. Beneath it, you will find the paddles of the six-speed sequential F1 transmission , which is one of the fastest in the world, shifting in 150 milliseconds. Even in the interior, you will find elements inspired by Formula 1 – for example, the LEDs on the steering wheel that advise the driver when to change gears correctly are the same as in the single-seaters in which Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher once drove. The center console itself is very thin and you will find only the essentials on it – except for the air conditioning, don't even expect any luxury equipment. The materials are, of course, at a level – aluminum, carbon is ubiquitous, and the seats and steering wheel are upholstered in leather.

Under the hood we find a twelve-cylinder with a volume of six liters codenamed Tipo F140B. The naturally aspirated unit has 4 valves per cylinder, dual cams and variable valve timing. The Enzo's output is 660 hp at 7,800 rpm and peak torque is 657 Nm at 5,500 rpm. The already mentioned 1365 kg is distributed in a ratio of 43.9:56.1 in favor of the rear axle. It is further assisted by a self-locking differential with traction control ASR, which can be set in sports or racing mode. Thanks to the very fast F1 transmission, the Enzo accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.65 seconds and to 200 km/h in 9.5 seconds. The maximum speed is up to 355 km/h, and you can cover a kilometer with a fixed start in 19.5 seconds. For the sake of interest, I mention the average consumption – approx. 20 l/100 km.

Carbon discs from Brembo with internal cooling, diameter 380 mm and six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston at the rear take care of comfortable stopping. These are hidden behind wheels with specially developed Bridgestone Potenza RE050 Scuderia tires measuring 245/35 ZR 19 at the front and 345/35 ZR 19 at the rear, the design of which has used knowledge from F1 cars. The chassis uses independent all-wheel suspension and electronically controlled dampers , which can raise or lower the car's ground clearance.

Only 399 + 1 units of the Enzo model were produced and they were sold only to loyal customers, which Ferrari chose mostly from former F40 or F50 owners. At the time of creation, the price was set at 650,000 euros (today approx. 17,900,000 CZK, in 2002 approx. 20,000,000 CZK). Another of the many interesting things revolving around this coupe is the time on the Nordschleife, where it was tested by Evo magazine – 7:25.21 seconds with damaged electronic dampers is not a bad result at all.

Probably the most famous Enzo derivative is the 2005 Ferrari FXX . This ultimate supercar is not intended for ordinary roads, and the owner can only drive it on the race track and even then only on days determined by Ferrari itself. To get into the FXX program, which includes everything from the Ferrari background, transporting the car to circuits predetermined by the brand, setting up the car according to the customer's needs or driving courses led by professionals in their field, the price was set at 1.5 million at the time of the car's inception euro (today approx. CZK 41,200,000). The car itself has under the hood a modified 12-cylinder engine from the Enzo rebore to a volume of 6.3 liters and an output of 800 horsepower at 8500 rpm . The transmission of power to the road is in charge, through specially developed Bridgestone tires, of an F1 sequential gearbox that can change gear in less than 100 milliseconds ! A total of 29 units were produced, which the car company sold to pre-selected customers. A special piece with serial number 30 was dedicated to Michael Schumacher in 2006, at the time of his first retirement from Formula 1. While all 29 cars had factory red bodywork with a white stripe, Schumacher's FXX was pure black.

In 2007, two years after the start of the original FXX program, Ferrari developed an upgrade of sorts called the FXX Evoluzione . This kit bumped the engine up to 860bhp at 9500rpm, added new Bridgestone tires and tinkered with the chassis as well. The F1 gearbox can shift in an incredible 60 milliseconds with this kit, reducing the acceleration time to 100 km/h to 2.5 seconds. The maximum speed of the FXX Evoluzione is theoretically up to 391 km/h.

In 2006, another Ferrari special based on the Enzo became the one-piece unique P4/5 by Pininfarina . It is already clear from the name who took care of the design of the body, commissioned by the film director and stock market tycoon James Glickenhaus . The entire project cost Glickenhaus 4 million dollars (today approx. 80 million crowns) and was created because the owner was simply not satisfied with the appearance of the Enzo and prefers the look of classic Ferrari sports models such as the 330 P3/4 or 512 S. It is worth noting that the interior designed by the car owner himself and includes, for example, a multimedia system with GPS navigation and a 3D model of the car. It is powered by the same 12-cylinder engine as in the case of the Enzo, but tuned to 669 horsepower and a maximum torque of 658 Nm. A six-speed sequential gearbox transmits power on the road.

The Ferrari Millechili is a concept car that was shown to the Ferrari management in 2007. The Millechili, translated as a thousand kilograms, was created as a potential successor to the Enzo with an aluminum frame from the F430 model and many technologies borrowed from Formula 1. The model with a wheelbase of 2650 mm was supposed to have a performance 608 horses and the production of 300 units was planned. It was supposed to start in 2010 and the basic price was supposed to be around 300,000 dollars (about 6 million crowns today). However, in the end, the production of a coupe with the Enzo design never took place.

I probably won't surprise most readers when I say that Enzo also has a twin. This is the 2004 Maserati MC12 with a six-liter twelve-cylinder under the hood. The MC12 was then further derived from the racing version of the Corsa (it has its twin in the Ferrari FXX for a change) and the Maserati Birdcage concept, which turned out to be a celebration of the 75th birthday of Pininfarina, who also designed the car, in Geneva in 2005. But that's already a completely different story…
