Volkswagen is developing a sporty version of the XL1 hybrid

Already at the premiere, the Volkswagen XL1 impressed with its excellent aerodynamics and low weight. However, any sporting ambitions that this combination might have evoked were buried by the diesel-electric powertrain . However, it seems that better times are ahead for VW!

Already in Geneva, a sports version of the XL1 model could be shown, which will be called XLR or XL Sport , and instead of a hybrid drive, we will find a 1.2-liter two-cylinder gasoline engine under the hood with an output of 190 hp at 10,750 rpm and a torque of 123 Nm at 9000 rpm As some may have already guessed, the engine comes from a motorcycle, in the case of the sporty XL1, specifically from the Ducati 1199 Panigale superbike .

The development of a similarly tuned car was confirmed to Autocar by Hans-Jakob Neusser, head of research and development at Volkswagen : "We are currently working on it and it is a very special project." We could see the XLR concept as early as spring in Geneva , and Volkswagen is reportedly ready to produce a limited number serial pieces.
