We have already written a lot about the sports model , which is being developed in cooperation between Toyota and BMW . Nevertheless, the following article might surprise you in some ways. BMW is planning to use the platform for the successor of the BMW 6 series !
Let's review some basic data about this cooperation – it all started in 2011 , when Toyota and BMW entered into a partnership for the production of lithium-ion batteries and an agreement to use BMW diesels under the hood of Toyota's European models. Later, this cooperation extended to the development of a joint sports car , and you already know this saga – a very light, flexible platform for models with rear-wheel drive should be created. CAR Magazine also adds that the engine will be located at the front, but at the same time it will be moved as far back as possible. The use of composite materials is also considered.
There is not much talk about its use in specific models yet, only Toyota cautiously admits that a new generation of Supra should be based on these foundations. However, according to sources from CAR Magazine , it shouldn't just stay with the Supra. In addition to it, Toyota is preparing a successor to the current model GT86 on the same basis as well as a small sports model , for the time being referred to as the MR2.
BMW has slightly different plans with the platform. In addition to the previously intended new generation of the Z4 roadster , the same basis could also be used by the next generation of the BMW 6 Series and especially its sharp version, the M6 . Compared to, for example, the Audi R8 or Porsche 911, it is more of a large grand tourer than a true sports model . And that is what is missing from the Bavarian automaker's offer today.
