Fiat 500X – joint production with a sibling from Jeep in Italy

In October of this year, there was speculation about whether the small new SUVs of the Fiat and Jeep brands would be produced in the same plant. We finally got around to it, and towards the end of this working week it was confirmed that both SUVs will be produced at the same factory , specifically in Melfi, Italy from early 2014.

The decision was made at a meeting attended by Chairman John Elkann, CEO of both brands Sergio Marchionne and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, directly at the mentioned plant on Thursday, December 20, 2012. The Italian concern Fiat is investing more than 1 billion Euros in the named plant to was prepared for the production of two models that will be built on a new modular platform.

The Fiat-Chrysler alliance has revealed that after a complete renovation, the Melfi plant will be able to produce up to four different models on a single assembly line . The total production capacity is expected to be 1,600 vehicles/day in three-shift operation. The upcoming Fiat 500X was revealed earlier at the presentation of the Italian brand (more in the video below the article), but from 2014 its "sibling" – a small SUV from the American Jeep – will be the first to be assembled. It will be sold worldwide, but it will only be produced in one plant – yes, you guessed it, in Melfi, Italy .
